Erotic Spy Novels

Believe it or not, we don't have a single one of these.

I remembered reading one in my agent slush that might have worked, but, alas, when I went back to find it, it was just too male-focused. Surely there's a whole new generation of horny chick lit spys out there? Or a wonderful retelling of a classic spy tale (Mata Hari) with all the sex actually thrown in? Or even a really hot M/M James Bond-type tale?

"Lost" chapters and Prequels

One of my partners came up with a brilliant idea. We are so great at brainstorming, which is why I love this team!

We were looking over the production schedule (and the covers are so hot!!!). We're doing really well with novels (over 100 signed up) and the audio books are being recorded (it is truly amazing to hear a sexy novel you've just edited read back to you by an emoting actress). We have about 30 short stories in, but we could really use more. We've already bought four of the 12 days of Christmas, and two more are promised, but we need six more.

But I digress.

We realized that one of the really great ways to get wonderful authors writing for us is to buy short stories from them using the characters from forthcoming print books that are pubbing that month. This is a way to promote the author and the book and Ravenous. It's a win-win situation.

So, if you have an erotic romance, or paranormal or something that can be made just a little smutty, send us your long, lost chapter, or prequel.

All In a Day's Work

So today I spoke to one of our authors who is working on an American Idol-like novel (that will be really hot), as well as two re-tellings of favorite love stories reset in contemporary times. As soon as the outlines come in, we'll go to contract.

We also signed another novel in our hot vampire S/M series, as well as a really dark and kinky novel set in the author's made-up comic book universe.

We also got four Christmas stories in overnight, so I'll read them this evening.

Twelve Days of Christmas

So we decided that a Christmas anthology might be a little limited as an ebook (when would you put it up and how long would people want to buy it?), so we decided to put up 12 individual Christmas stories - one a day.

I actually have some titles - so be inspired!

Hunky Santa
Christmas Tips
Secret Santa
Merry (se)Xmas

I can't wait to see what we get!

M/M Anthology and Hanukkah Erotica

We're signing up a number of anthologies and will need short stories, so please send us what you've got.

John Michael Curlovich, who has written some great gay vampire fiction and edited a horror novella collection, will be editing our Manthology anthology, so please send us your M/M stories. We're open to everything from contemporary to historical, from paranormal to literary. Stories should run between 1500 and 5000 words. Attachments are fine. Deadline is October 10.

We also just signed erotica writer EllaRegina to edit our Hanukkah erotica collection. We're looking for eight fabulous stories, between 4000 and 5000 words, preferably sweet and magical (and kinky too). Deadline is October 26.

Meanwhile I'm putting the finishing touches on the in-house SEX AND SHOES anthology. It was really a fun experience and the stories were so good, and so different.

We Do Erotic Memoir too!

One of the categories we're really excited about doing is erotic memoir.

There's been this incredible surge of autobiographical sharing in the blogosphere (Belle du Jour and The Washingtonian started as blogs). I couldn't put down ROUND-HEELED WOMAN and CATHERINE M. We're hoping to be able to help publish some of that in a regular category for erotic memoir. So, if you follow an incredible blog (or write one), let us know about it so we can contact the author and see if we can help her/him develop it into a book that s/he can share with even more readers.

One of our authors is also putting together a collection of essays on humorous sexcapades, so you could also send us one of those.

New Ravenous Romance Short Story is Up

We just posted a new free short story on raveneousromance.com. It's by Dahlia Schweitzer whose first erotic short story collection, SEDUCE ME, was pubbed by Avon. We're doing her next one, I've Been a Naughty Girl. Every story in it is amazingly hot. I read it in two sittings! It will be one of our December books.

Even if you've already signed on for the first story, go on again and download this one. It's worth it.

Submissions are really starting to come in now. We've signed another 10 short stories and 7 novels this week. One of the authors we've just signed used to write for one of the major daily soap operas!

More Stories and Novels

We REALLY, REALLY need some great romantic and sexy Christmas stories, so please send them our way. Deadline is October 1.

If you've got an idea for a hot, Christmas novel, email us.

Also looking for New Year's Eve stories, and a New Year's novel.

We're doing signature anthologies for each of our categories, so we're putting one together for our environmental category. That would be stories about saving the earth and your soul, which can be surprisingly hot, such as a vegetarian attracted to a hunter; science vs. religion (and how they meet); going green at all costs, etc.

How I Find Novels

Some of you are familiar with this story because you've been reading my agenting blog (agentinthemiddle.blogspot.com), but it is one of my favorite agent stories, and directly relates to how I work as an editor at Ravenous.

When Cecilia Tan and I were reading and editing the first MILF Anthology for Blue Moon books (we are doing a second one for Ravenous Romance, so get your hot mom next door stories in!), one of the stories was by a well-published erotica writer. DUCHAL SERVICE was about a 39 year-old duchess who had to get pregnant by her 40th birthday or be put to death and so required the services of a young stable boy who turned out to have a thing for her anyway. The last line of the story was something along "if you don't get pregnant, I'll run off with you." I loved it.

So when I met the author at a reading, I asked her what happened to the Duchess and the stable boy, and she said, "I have no idea." I was flabbergasted, and I told her so, and told her I thought it was a novel. She thought about it and agreed, but she had never written a novel before.

We worked on an outline and a chunk of the book (because it was her first novel) and sold it to Harlequin's Spice line where you can buy it as THE DUCHESS, HER MAID, THE GROOM AND THEIR LOVER (a December book, that is smokin' hot). She had been writing (and publishing) erotica short stories for years, many of which were great ideas for novels, but she didn't know which ones to develop.

This just happened with an unsolicted short story we got in over the guidelines transom. It was a very racy tale of Hollywood homosexuality in the 50's. It was a very nice set piece, but just not quite right for our daily short stories, but riveting nonetheless. So we've decided to see if the author can write a fictionalized memoir of old Hollywood for our GLBT line. I think it will be sizzling.

I'm also reading the stories we got in for SEX AND SHOES, and one of them might turn into a novel, as well.

Why I'm Blogging

It suddenly dawned on me just how exciting all of this is. Holly and I have bought 75 books in the past six weeks, and signed up at least 25 short stories. Who gets to do that in publishing today? Most editors only buy between 12 and 30 books a year.

We've signed up first novelists and best-sellers writing under pseudonyms.

So much of what we've bought is really great material that just wasn't right for the current marketplace (too long or too short), and with a little guidance, we were able to turn average stuff into some incredibly creative material.

And we have a ton of books to assign, which has been so much fun. I love brainstorming with Holly, and coming up with these different takes on classic love stories. It's how we came up with the concept of doing An Officer and a Gentleman as a M/M book, which has now been delivered and is so hot, it scorches!

So watch this blog to see what else we're looking for.

As you know, I am currently editing the submissions I received for the anthology SEX AND SHOES, which is closed.

I still need stories for MEN IN SHORTS, so I'm extending the deadline until September 30.

We're putting together Christmas and New Year's anthologies, so please send us your stories.

And we'll need one Halloween story for the website.
