Sextrology for the New Year

We're snowed in for New year's Eve. We were supposed to go to an annual New Year's Eve party in Cambridge, MA, but they had 10 inches of snow and thunder snowstorms!!!

So, I took the ham out of the refrigerator and sat down with my December magazines, which I hadn't even opened. Every year, since I was 17, I've bought Cosmo's Bedside Astrologer so they can tell me that I should wear green this year (I don't own anything green) or smell like Britney Spears. But I love it, and just can't give up the fascination.

That's also why we brought you Sephera Giron's Sextrology anthology. It's a book of 12 short stories based on predictions for the New Year. Seph is a practising astrologer, who has been doing readings for over two decades (and is usually right on target). She's also the author of our Sextrology series, which features novels built around prediction for that month's sign. Each novel follows a different character throughout her birthday month as she looks for love in all the wrong -and some of the right - places. Right now you can read about Natasha, our vampire Capricorn, and Maggie, our tarot-reading Sagittarius.

It's also why we offer you a free horoscope every day.

So, I'm going to catch up on my reading for guilty pleasure, which will include the Sextrology anthology. You should too. Let me know what you think.

Great New Writer

Today's Book of the Day is Force My Hand by Em Brown, who was an unpublished novelist we met at this year's RWA conference in San Francisco.

Force My Hand is a fantastically erotic historical novel set in a saloon gaming room.

Below is the synopsis, but it doesn't do this book justice!

Independent and always in command, Darcy Sherwood holds her own among the cads and rakes who frequent the dubious gaming hall where she works. When she has the opportunity to exact revenge upon the man who wronged her sister, she intends to provide the arrogant Baron Broadmoor the biggest set-down of his life…by requiring him to be her suitor.

But when the Baron begins to play his role too well, can Darcy resist falling for the man she’s supposed to hate above all others?

Radcliff Barrington, Baron Broadmoor, has no intention of quietly submitting to Miss Sherwood – even if she does hold the deed that could ruin his family. He intends to turn the tables on Miss Sherwood. She must surrender the deed or surrender herself…
Passions flare to erotic heights as Darcy and Radcliff struggle to see who will submit to whom. And all bets are off as to who will win…

Playgirl by Regina Perry

This is one of my favorite Ravenous Romance novels. It's a great story of a woman's coming to her own sexuality in middle age. And the cover is incredible.

We've bought two more short stories from this author (yesterday's Brettstrubation was the Ravenous Rendezvous) and she's editing an anthology for us titled I Kissed a Girl!

Playgirl was her first fiction sale, and we are hoping we've created a monster!

I just finished editing the "erotic Star Trek" novel we commissioned, and I have to tell you, it's hot and wildly creative.

Destiny's Jewel and Magic Condoms!

Destiny's Jewel is one of my favorite titles. It's a terrific sci-fi/fantasy romance with alien magicians and an intergalactic quest (with Kings and Queens too). But my absolute favorite part of this trilogy are the magic condoms.

Yesterday and today the Ravenous Rendezvous are Hanukkah stories. There's magic in that holiday too!

Enjoy!

I've Been a Naughty Girl!

Our book of the day today is Dahlia Schweitzer's I've Been a Naughty Girl, a collection of fabulous sexy and kinky erotic romance short stories. I loved every story in this book, and even went out and bought her other short story collection after reading this.

Dahlia also wrote A Partridge in a Pear Tree, the first of the 12 short stories in our 12 days of Christmas collection - one for each line of the classic Christmas song.

She's a wonderful writer, which is why we featured one of the stories from this book as our free teaser when the site was getting ready to launch.

I can't believe we are 10 days into our 12 days of Christmas collection. It's so much fun. I hope you've had a chance to download some of these creative, kinky stories, or maybe you'll just buy it for a Christmas gift for yourself to read when all the wrapping and unwrapping is over?

Romantic S & M

Today's Book of the Day is the romantic BLIND SEDUCTION by Debra Hyde, a prominent short story and ebook author who really knows the BDSM territory. In this novel, she's written an amazingly romantic tale of a couple's visit to an S&M retreat as an anniversary present.

We've just signed a 4-book deal for her Kith series, which is a cross between Jacquelin Carey's Kushiel series and Anne Rice's Beauty Books.

Our Erotic Gone with the Wind is the Book of the Day!

Land of the Falling Stars is one of our favorite books.

Imagine if Rhett were a Yankee!

Anyway, the synopsis is below, but you should love this one.

The cover is great too.

The synopsis: Penniless, her parents and brother dead, Sophia Whitfield struggles to save her beloved childhood home during the Civil War. Another bluecoat is staggering down the hill, but before Sophia allows him to rob and pilfer like the others, she shoots him. How is she to know it is Gavin, the dark knight of her youth, carrying secrets too horrific to imagine and a passion that ignites her deepest desires?
As Sophia gradually learns Gavin's secrets-and enjoys his talents in the bedroom-she discovers how to finally know her own heart. Can she save the Land of Falling Stars, or will she lose it all to the horrors of the War and Reconstruction? And will the Southern lady and the Yankee soldier be able to recapture the bliss of their youth - this time in each other's arms?

SEX & SHOES is the Book of the Day!

The first anthology I edited for Ravenous Romance is the book of the day.

I love the cover, and I had a blast editing this anthology. I think the stories are fantastic, and quite varied. I love these authors and stories. Many of them later came in with novels and serials, so this was my introduction to working with quite a few new writers.

I want this anthology to be really successful, because I want to do a second volume of SEX AND SHOES, so tell your friends to buy it (or give it to them as a Christmas present - who wouldn't want SEX & SHOES for Christmas?)

I'm hoping that by the time I get the green light to edit another volume of SEX & SHOES, we'll be established enough to go to a place like Frederick's of Hollywood or Sexyshoes.com and get them to do some co-op advertising with us (and pay the contributors in shoes!!! - so, if anyone has any shoe contacts, pass them on.

In the Life Call for Submissions

Call for Submissions – In the Life

How many times have you read an SM story and thought, “no bottom could ever survive that position” or “nylon rope doesn’t behave that way!”? I’m editing a BDSM erotic romance anthology for Ravenous Romance using stories by authors who are actually a part of the BDSM community. Think collaring/piercing ceremonies written by an author who understands the psychology behind such a moment or sessions with a singletail described with realistic detail.

Deadline: January 8, 2009, but please feel free to submit stories ahead of the deadline.

• I am particularly interested in stories centered on established and committed relationships (any type of pairing or polyamorous relationship is fine).
• No previously published stories.
• Stories should be approximately 2500 – 5000 words (flexible).

Submission Guidelines: Email submissions to mplperkinsagency at gmail dot com as a Word or RTF attachment with “IN THE LIFE ANTHOLOGY SUBMISSION” in the subject line. Please include your name (and pseudonym if applicable), mailing address, email, title of the piece and word count as part of your document. The footer of each page should include your name and page number.

Please submit an author’s BIO with your work that could be used for publication. Given the nature of the anthology, make sure that that your BIO addresses your involvement in BDSM (do you present at regional organizations, have you personally been an SM player for 10 years? Etc.)

Happy Writing!

Some Amazing Publicity, and Its Translation

As many of you know, we were profiled in The London Times (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article5337809.ece). While this was supposed to be a story about a new kind of publishing in a market in a tailspin, the fact that one of our authors was a protege of John Updike, who gave her erotic writing a resoundingly positive quote, ending up taking center stage.

The piece made the international wires and we were featured in Australia, Thailand, France and Spain, and then made a mention in the New Yorker where we had been re-invented into a company that was blasting 500 word erotica briefs to cell phones. The next day we made The Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/booksblog/2008/dec/16/john-updike-phone-porn), where a huge photo of John Updike announced that he was a supporter of cell phone porn.

At first we were chagrined at the inaccuracies and misquotes (some quotes were actually taken from an interview Holly Schmidt gave two years ago about another company), but the hits just kept on coming to the website, so we gave in. It is truly amazing how many people have read these stories.

Ravenous Audio

Our audio book excerpts are up on the site and they are terrific. It is wonderful to hear the books I've edited read back to me.

I just listened to the first chapter of I've Been a Naughty Nurse by Jamaica Layne (our raunchy Doctors in Lust novel) and The Glass Stiletto by Rachel Kenley (that's our S&M version of Cinderella), and they were great. I really wished there was another chapter up. So anyone who wants an idea of either the content of the books and/or quality of the audiobooks, should listen to an excerpt.

Our audio books are being recorded by the same studio that does audiobooks for Audible, so they are professional and as good as anything else out there on the market. One of my blog readers downloaded one of the audiobooks, transferred it onto CD's to play in the car and reported back that it took 5 disks.

I can't wait to drive to the company head-quarters in Beverly with one of the Ravenous titles playing - probably Opposite Sex by Gina McQueen. Holly dubbed that sex exchange novel "Freaky Friday with sex," and it's supposed to be really funny.

Ravenous Romance on Galleycat.com

E-Book Romancers Set Out to Capture "New Mass Market"

When we spoke with the founding partners of Ravenous Romance over the phone Monday afternoon, the electronic publishing house was in its first few hours of operations, and they'd already managed to sell "a couple hundred" erotica and romance e-books, from the genderswitching comedy Opposite Sex to The Glass Stiletto, a dominance-and-submission-themed variation on the Cinderella story. The company also planned to publish a new novel ($4.99) and a new short story (99 cents) every day, including a special "12 Days of Christmas" batch of short stories later this month that uses the carol's list as a jump-off point. All of these stories will be available in PDF, PRC, and .epub formats; Ravenous will also sell audiobooks in MP3 format (for $12.99).

Ravenous is a cooperative venture that brings together veteran literary agent Lori Perkins with Allan Penn and Holly Schmidt, who had previously created the book packaging firm Hollan Publishing. "Allan and I had been talking about getting into the romance genre for a while," Schmidt told us, "and Lori wanted to launch a line of erotica fiction." But Schmidt didn't want to start a publishing company and have to deal with physical inventory. As the discussions continued, electronic publishing arose as an increasingly viable option. "It took me a while to adjust to the economics of e-publishing," Schmidt confessed, but "I really think this is the new mass market... We would love to be the e-book publisher that bridges the gap" between the sales figures for electronic and print editions of erotica and romance titles.

There's certainly money to be made if they can do it—the Ravenous press release places the romance genre's annual sales at $1.37 billion, accounting for more than a quarter of the book units sold. And the readers themselves are a desirable demographic: More than half of them under 44 years old, and nearly three-quarters of them college-educated. These women are computer-literate, eager to adopt new technologies, and as recently as 2006 they were buying, on average, nine romance novels a year. (We have no data handy to determine whether recent economic conditions have caused a dip in romance novel purchasing, although anecdotal evidence suggests the genre thrives in periods of widespread social and cultural anxiety.)

Perkins added that she had come to work with a number of talented erotica writers over the course of her career, and had become frustrated with the limits to what they could achieve in the traditional publishing world. "The problem with the print world," Perkins explained, "was that [authors] wanted to write 10 books a year, and I could only sell two." Now, she said, Ravenous not only provided an outlet for their work, it was also able to pay authors at a competitive royalty rate of 38 percent.

As Schmidt interjected that she was "thrilled and inspired by the quality of the work we're receiving," Perkins mentioned some of the writers involved: In addition to erotica fiction stars Rachel Kramer Bussel and Cecilia Tan, Ravenous has already published a supernatural romantic comedy from writer John Skipp (writing as Gina McQueen) and a forthcoming novel from Catherine Hiller that would feature a blurb from her literary mentor, John Updike. "At the end of the day," Perkins observed, "everybody wants to write about love and sex.

How to Download a Ravenous Romance Audiobook on CD

One of my blog readers wrote in asking how to get a CD to play in the car out of the audio download.

You can burn a CD of any audio book using iTunes.

Here is a tutorial:

We're Live!!

Somewhere between 7:00 a.m. and right this minute, our website went live. We've been beta testing all week, but watching that first order come in at 7:36 was so exciting.

EXPOSING NICOLE by Hayden Renier is our book of the day. It's a novel about a sex columnist writing under a pseudonym, written by a sex columnist writing under a pseudonym. Of course, she's been looking for love in all the wrong places and finds it right under her nose.

Our Ravenous Rendezvous is the story SUCCUBUSTED, by Inara Lavey. It is the tale of a succubus who meets her match, and the sparks literally fly.

We've put up another 11 short stories and 11 novels and one erotic memoir, to give you a good overview of what we have to offer in our 12 categories. Once Dec 14th arrives, we'll put up a brand new book a day and the Ravenous Rendezvous at noon every day. Our Seductive serial will be published every Sunday, so this week's serialized novel, VITAL SIGNS: I've been a Naughty Nurse by JAMAICA LAYNE launches on the 7th.

So, tell your friends and family to visit.

Hope you enjoy!.
