New Call for Stories: Guns 'N Hoses (M/M Cops & Firemen)

Ravenous Romance is looking for original, unpublished erotic romance stories featuring gay cops or firemen. Think of your typical sultry fireman or hunky state trooper, and put them in a wild escapade. Perhaps the deputy chief is training his new lieutenant on how to put something other than a gun in a holster. Or maybe it’s a story of a fireman rescuing the man of his dreams from a burning house and soon realizes there’s another fire he needs to put out. You get the point.

The cop and fireman fantasy is a classic. It’s for this reason we want stories that will reinvent the wheel, and offer our readers something raw and kinky.

Please make sure your story has a strong plot, lots of graphic sex and a happy ending (pun intended). All stories must center only on gay men and include only gay sex.

Submit your 50,000-word novel in the genres of erotic romance, horror, crime, or mystery/thriller to Editorial Director Lori Perkins by December 1, 2011. Our team of editors will evaluate the submissions and choose first place winners, as well as honorable mentions, from each genre for publication by Ravenous Romance or Ravenous Shadows.

What's up in the sky, is not a bird or a plane, it is your hero or heroine. Under the Cape - is a super-hero / super-heroine anthology for Ravenous Romance. We are looking for original erotic romances about heroes of your own creation. They should not be modeled after or based on current comic book entities. Fan fiction need not apply.
Think about strong, passionate characters and world building. Who is to say what excitement lingers after the city is saved and villain routed? Do the heroes fly home at super-sonic speeds to their lovers or does the "victor" strike a new costume to wear? What if the hero of the story has had a tryst or more with their foe? And don’t forget about the possibilities of a sidekick.
This anthology is for the non-everyday heroes. We're looking for the kind of heroes who fly, shoot bolts of energy or phase through walls...among other abilities. Of course, that's not to say your hero or heroine can't have a hidden identity. A war hero crusading at night to stop an other-worldly nemesis? Maybe a firefighter who controls the flames when no one else is looking? Make the abilities so super, they can only be contained by a skin tight costume and cape flying in the breeze. And make your hero or heroine so sexy they can’t be contained at all.
All stories should be original and unpublished stories. Aside from strong characters, don't forget to give us a good story and world building. Make your heroes and villains believable and sexy. Digital publisher Literary Partners Group, Inc., owner of Ravenous Romance, has hired bestselling author and award-winning editor John Skipp as editorial director of their new imprint, Ravenous Shadows. Skipp will be responsible for all editing and acquisitions, with an estimated schedule of four titles per month. These will include horror, thrillers, crime, mystery, and suspense. The first books will release this fall in a soft launch, with a full launch scheduled for the first quarter of 2012.
Skipp’s tastes are broad yet demanding, and his requirements unusually specific. “I’m looking for 200-250 page genre novels, wildly entertaining, with no fat or filler. We’ll be specializing in smart, fun, compulsive page-turners that can be read in the amount of time it takes to watch a feature film.”
Skipp will be looking at originals and reprints, by both industry pros and new writers looking to break in. He’s looking to nurture careers, is very interested in developing continuing characters and series, and making Ravenous Shadows “a unique boutique imprint for dark, kickass popular entertainment.”
This does not preclude Skipp’s editorial work with Eraserhead Press and his own Fungasm Press, nor his series of theme anthologies with Black Dog and Leventhal. “I’m on a mission to make reading cool again,” Skipp says, “and Ravenous Shadows is an incredible opportunity to take that mission to the mainstream. I’m incredibly excited.”

I am so glad to have so many of my erotic romance reading friends and colleagues in town this month for RWA and Ravenous Nights. Unfortunately, our reading series will be happening at the exact same time as the banquet ceremony, which I do love, but since I am the purveyor of this reading series, I'll be at Happy Endings listening to four fabulous authors read their happy endings!

I believe this is good news for many of my romance reading peers, as some couldn't afford to attend RWA (and are just hanging out for the parties and camaraderie). So, if you're in town and not attending the banquet, come on down to 302 Broome Street at 8:00 and hear some steamy smut.

I'm a little behind on editing the in-house anthologies, so if you haven't heard from us, it only means I haven't finished reading and editing the stories.

I am editing the SEX TOYS anthology now. The first of the in-house anthologies to go up will be APOCALYPSE TODAY, followed by STEAM HEAT, and then SLAVE TO BLOOD. So, if you were meaning to get a story in, there is still time.

We will also be doing a STOCKING STUFFER anthology for Christmas, so look for that announcement soon. We're looking for 24 shorter stories - up to 2500 words, with a Dec. 10 deadline.

Ravenous Romance Expands with Two New Editorial Hires

Literary Partners Group, Inc., which owns and operates digital erotic romance publisher Ravenous Romance, has hired Russell Davis and Jennifer Safrey as acquisitions editors.

Davis has acquired and edited books for Tor Books, Kensington, DAW Books, iBooks, Five Star Publishing (an imprint of Gale Cengage), and Foggy Windows Books. Several of Davis's acquisitions have won major awards, including the Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Award, the ARTemus Award - Book of the Year, Top 10 Romances from Booklist, and two of his acquisitions were finalists for the coveted RITA Award. Davis was also a nominee for the PASIC (Published Authors Special Interest Chapter) Chapter of RWA for their 2^nd Annual Editor of the Year Award.

Under a variety of pseudonyms and in virtually every genre of fiction, Davis has written and sold more than twenty novels and dozens of short stories. He has served on the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, Inc. (SFWA) Board of Directors, including two years (2008-2010) as President.

Safrey has been a copyeditor for Ravenous Romance since 2008, and is the author of four Harlequin romance novels, two of which won the Golden Leaf Award for best contemporary romance. She was previously editor at The Boston Herald and a past President of the New England Chapter of RWA.

APOCALYPSE TODAY: Love Among the Ruins (Deadline 8/1/10).
It's the End of the World and you're looking for Love, simple as that. The world could have ended in nuclear disaster, environmental chaos, vampire/zombie apocalypse, 2012 predictions, it's your call. You can give us those old science fiction sex troupes - everyone has to have sex to repopulate the world (A Girl and Her Pussy, so to speak). This should be a lot of fun, and a wild ride. Be bold and go where NO MAN has ever gone before (because these stories are mainly for women readers). And please give me at least one all M/M future and one F/F world view.

Next up would be STEAM HEAT , our in-house Steampunk anthology (deadline 9/1/10). I assume you all know that Steampunk is the future of the past wherein steam and gear technology are still being used in the present, so we live in a world with steam driven computers and dirigibles instead of airplanes. It's all very British Victorian, but often takes place in America, so you could set these stories anywhere in the "British Empire" of the 1880's or there abouts (India, Hong Kong). We're looking for interesting twists on the steam technology - so steam vibrators and fuck machines, lots of time travel machines (H.G. Wells and Jules Verne - you could, of course, make them characters in the stories). I once suggested a Steampunk Story of O, or sex castle. Steampunk fairy tales? Again, be creative, but re-examine the science-fiction and historical troupes of the time and give them new life. And please, mix up the gender roles.

SLAVE TO BLOOD is our in-house Vampire BDSM anthology (deadline 10/1/10 for Halloween, of course). Brings a whole new meaning to Master Vampires? Rethink the classics (Renfield and Camilla and those Hammer horror films) and the contemporaries, as you run the whole vampire mythos through the D/s filter. You'll never think of it quite the same way again, I promise.

The books will be published in trade paperback at the rate of two per month starting in June 2010.

“We see this partnership as an enormous opportunity to expand our reach – Red Wheel/Weiser has the sales expertise and distribution power to bring our authors’ work to a large audience,” says Ravenous Romance president and co-founder Holly Schmidt.

Romance is the number one category in fiction, with sales of $1.37 billion in 2008. Says Red Wheel/Weiser publisher Jan Johnson, “We’ve been looking for a way to expand on our success in non-fiction, and Red Silk Editions is an opportunity to do that for readers who are interested in both story and various metaphysical, paranormal, pagan principles. Red Wheel/Weiser has acquired world rights to the titles and plans to distribute them widely in English-speaking markets as well as license foreign-language rights. The titles include books by Cecilia Tan, Isabel Roman, Angela Cameron, and Rhonda Leigh Jones, and will encompass a wide variety of paranormal subgenres.

Call for F/F (lesbian) fiction

As you all know, RR has had tremendous success with our M/M titles. We've been nominated for a Lambda and one of our short stories in the Manthology anthology edited by Jo hn Jo ckel was chosen as the best M/M short story of the year by Book Utopia. And we’ve sold print rights to many of our M/M titles.

We'd like to do the same for F/F.

And we think we can. I KISSED A GIRL edited by Regina Perry was just chosen as one of the top 10 ebook titles of 2009 by a reviewer at Rainbow Reviews. Many of the romance reviewers who read it started their review off by saying " I don't usually read (or like) lesbian fiction but..."

So what we're looking for are novels that bring the romance sensibility to the lesbian experience in a fun and hot way. With our M//M fiction, we took well-loved romance themes and classic stories and set them in new and/or contemporary settings with two men.

We want to try that with women.

We are looking for contemporaries, historicals (even fiction featuring famous women), paranormals, and kinky stories.

So we are looking for someone to take a chance on writing THE PRINCESS' BRIDE.

or MUST LOVE CATS.

We'd like a female version of THE THORNBIRDS (if you are interested, email me - I have the basic plot).

Could someone try a lesbian GONE WITH THE WIND (loosely based on Scarlet and Melanie - they loved the same man, and now they love each other?)

How ' bout a F/F Bridges of Madison County? The main character can be divorced or widowed or abandoned by her husband. Maybe THE WIDOWS OF MADISON COUNTY and bill it as a lesbian DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES meets BRIDGES.

I wanted to do The Graduate as THE GRADUATE STUDENT. The main character is seduced by a professor, but falls in love with the professor's daughter.

We will also be doing two in-house F/F anthologies shortly - GIRL CRUSH and WHERE THE BOYS AREN'T. We’d also like to do a kinky lesbian anthology.

We are doing 3 in-house anthologies.

The first deadline is for TOUCHDOWNS, a M/M football short story collection. Think of Tom Brady and his tight end. 'Nough said?

But you can set these stories in professional football, football camp, college football, touch football. You can set them in the past. You could probably set them in the future (football without gravity?) and at night amongst vampires and werewolves.

Deadline of Jan. 25th, because we're putting it up for you to read during the SuperBowl.

The next two anthologies are a result of the success of another of our in-house anthologies. THREESOMES seems to have found an audience, so we want more (and so do you).

We're doing THREE'S A CHARM, a paranormal menage a trois anthology. Angels, demons, witches, ghosts, shape shifters, weres, and vampires.

We're also doing ONCE UPON A THREESOME, an historical threesome collection. Set the stories in Victorian England, the American Revolution, Civil War, the Roaring 20's, Paris between the Wars, and please, please give me some rock'n'roll threesomes set in the 60's and 70's.

Call for M/M Werewolf Novellas

RR will be doing some novellas. They should run between 20,000 and 35,000 words.

And we know you love M/M stuff and our paranormal titles, so what could be hotter than M/M werewolves? Two Alphas at once (or three, please). This anthology could also feature werewolf/vampire pairings, as well as werewolf/other weres/shifters.

But yes, we want at least three (and maybe four, if they're really really good). Mix it up. Give me contemporary urban fantasy, historical (the old New Orleans Loup Garou - I Love those sexy French werewolves). Can we have Steampunk werewolves? What about a gay werewolf on a spaceship? NANOWRIMO at RR

November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) in which new writers are encouraged to figure out a way to write an entire 50,000 word novel in 30 days (which is a little over 1600 words a day).

Last year more than 100,000 writers participated, and every year one or two of them get published.

We'd like to increase the odds.

Ravenous Romance novels are 50,000 - 60,000 words. We love finding new writers. So, we'd really like you to write a 50,000 word novel for RR.

Although we publish just about every category of erotic romance, our readers are anxious for more M/M/, paranormal and menage. We'd love to see more science fiction erotic romance, or what we cal Futurotica. And, of course, we always love good contemporary and historical novels.

Zombie Romance

If you've been following me on facebook, you know that I have spent the past three weeks knee deep in zombies - zombie romance stories that is. We received 110 stories for HUNGRY FOR YOUR LOVE, our zombie romance anthology that will pub around Halloween.

I sent it to the copy editor on Saturday, and we already have a cover and an offer for reprint rights form a major house (but the book might go into auction, so I can't leak the details yet - do stay tuned.)

I wanted to share the introduction to the anthology with you, because I am really excited about this book. I think it's the best anthology I've personally edited, and I am hoping that it will become part of the conversation on the zombie zeitgeist in American pop culture.

Introduction

They said it couldn’t be done.
And like the undead, I rose to the challenge.
This anthology was born in July 2009 at the 29th Northeastern Writer’s Conference, affectionately known by its regular participants as “Camp Necon.” Every year since its inception, Necon has what we also affectionately call “that damn vampire panel.” But this year, we had a zombie panel instead. The revolution had begun.
As soon as the panel opened, someone brought up the question of whether or not the zombie mythos could possibly have the staying power of the vampire appeal in American pop culture.
And I said yes.
As soon as the words had left my mouth, the audience responded, “but you can’t have zombie romance.”
And I said yes, you could.
As soon as I got back to the Ravenous Romance office, I informed my colleagues that we would be doing a zombie romance anthology. They were emphatically skeptical. We posted the thesis on Facebook and hundreds of readers said they couldn’t imagine romance with rotting corpses.
Oh, ye of little faith.
The zombie mythos is the perfect metaphor for the end of an era, for a society beset with change it doesn’t understand but knows is here.
Vampires were the cultural embodiment of the end of the millennium: seductive immortals with (literally) cutthroat greed. Then came the recession and the end of the Bush boom, and with it came the realization that we were all worker drones paying off our bloated mortgages, bloodsucking corporations and even each other.
We are the dead.
So, in these pages you will find zombie tales that span the possibilities and boggle the brain. Jeremy Wagner’s Love Ain’t Dead and Michael Marshall Smith’s Later are two of the most romantic stories of lost love you will ever read. Dating the undead? Try I Heart Brains by Jaime Saare and Elizabeth Coldwell’s zombie threesome in Everyone I Love is Dead. Love among the dead? Take notes from Francesca Lia Block’s Revenants Anonymous or S.M. Cross’s Through Death to Love.
And what about undead exes? Gina McQueen’s Apocalypse as Foreplay gives you one take you’ll never forget; then there’s Jan Kozlowski’s First Love Never Dies. And leave it to zombie master Brian Keene to show us how we can find love and revenge in the time of the zombie apocalypse in Captive Hearts.
But it’s not all George Romero’s zombie hordes in these pages. Old-fashioned voodoo zombies make their presence known in Isabel Roman’s Zombified and Mercy Loomis’s White Knight, Black Horse.

We just sold print rights to two more books, and signed a major 18-book print deal that will bring our writers and our brand enormous national exposure. It’s very exciting and we can’t wait to announce the details, but under the terms of the contract we can’t say anything for three more weeks. Stay tuned and we’ll promise to reveal everything on September 13th.

In other news, dozens of our books can now be purchased in trade paperback from Amazon. So for those of you who still prefer paperbacks, you can find many RR favorites there. We’re working on getting all of our full-length novels and anthologies into print, and hope to have that complete within the next two months.

We’re sad to announce that Michelle, our office manager, will be leaving us. We have had a few glitches with bookkeeping and contracts during the transition. But we are getting caught up, and we thank all of our authors for bearing with us. We will miss Michelle.

This was our second royalty quarter in business, and the first in which some of our authors earned out their advances (congratulations!). We are able now to really see which books (and types of books) are selling. We’ve adjusted our editorial planning accordingly, and are investing resources in developing new books and authors we know our readers will love.

Having come from the print publishing business, we have had a steep learning curve in e-commerce and e-publishing, and continue to learn more every day about what our readers are looking for. We’re working hard to serve our readers and build careers for our authors both in e-books and print.

Our traffic and sales grow every month, and we continue to invest considerable resources in building our business. We just unveiled some new site changes last week, and have more in development.

One of the changes we plan is to fix our sales reporting; when our site was built, the report feature was not designed to report units sold, just dollars. We have heard from our authors that they really want to see units, so that change is on the list, and we hope to have it complete by next quarter.

We’re also in talks with RT about the new and improved Digital Book Expo that will launch in April in Columbus. We’d love to hear your ideas.

There are some who just can't go there, but we're much more creative. We will boldly go where no romance writer has gone before.

So we're doing an anthology of zombie love stories, as well as a possible collection of Zombie romance novellas. This is love amongst the undead, between zombies and the living, and (we hope) many stories about the hot, alpha male and female zombie killers (I actually think this is where there's real opportunity). I know some of you will take this opportunity to give me cross genre tales I can't even imagine (zombie/vampire lovin' perhaps?). But let's be bold. One of my writer's jokingly offered, "Scarlett O'Hara, Zombie Killer," but who amongst us could refuse to read that one?

But seriously, folks. The zombie metaphor is rich. You know - we're all really zombies; our jobs make us zombies; zombies are a reflection of the mindless horde that is America, rotting on its own abundance. This Meth epidemic is making zombies of us all.

And the socio/political/scientific elements of the zombie mythos are ripe for exploration. What's it like to be king of the Zombies? Would zombie TV be any different? What exactly would it be like to be a zombie in love? Or to love a zombie?

So, hit me with your best shot.

Short stories should run between 1500 and 5000 words, and novellas between 20,000 and 30,000 words.

Loved Lori Foster's Readers and Writer's Get Together

I had a great time at Lori Foster's Readers and Writer's Get Together this weekend. This is a great conference. Very low key, and very affordable, but terrific for networking. Half of the people are readers, so writers come away with fans, which is a great feeling. And very famous authors attend, and are very accessible. This is what romance conventions should be like.

And so many writers knew about Ravenous and were eager to submit to us, so the word is out.

I had a great time hanging out with RR authors Lexi Ryan, Jamaica Layne and Bethany Michaels. We laughed, we cried, we brain stormed, and will be taking over the world on Tuesday.

And the food in Cincinnati is incredible.

Graeter's ice cream was sinful, as was the three-way I had at Skyline (so good, in fact, that I had seconds, and tried the three-way at Gold Star in the airport). BTW, a Cincinnati three-way is a chili concoction of spaghetti toped with chili and cheddar cheese. Sounds odd, but is delicious. Also had ribs at Montgomery Inn and they fell off the bone and into my stomach. So, I will be eating rabbit food all week (but it was worth it).

Two Books Sold to Alyson

So, in all the excitement of RT, followed by the Digital Rights conference, plus my week-long cruise to Alaska (where I did not work), I forgot to post that we have sold two more novels for reprint to Alyson Publishing (of course, we told the authors).

We are thrilled to announce that Alyson Publishing will publish two RR titles in 2010 as what we all hope will be their new foray into gay romance publishing. They will publish our best-selling titles AN OFFICER AND HIS GENTLEMAN by Ryan Field and SEX, LIES AND WEDDING BELLS by EM Lynley. Don Weise, the publisher of Alyson, and someone who has been reading gay erotica for at least two decades, said our books were as good, if not better, than anything he's ever read. And, that if this is the direction romance novels have gone in since he last read them, then he better start reading romance novels again!

Erotic Romance, Not Just Erotica and Romance

This appears on Love Romance Passion blog today.

Our tale begins in 1970, which is the year some point to as the beginning of the modern romance genre, with the arrival of the manuscript The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss on the desk of editor Nancy Coffey at Avon. The book would be a huge bestseller, kicking off a new era of romance publishing, and Woodiwiss was the first of the “Avon Ladies.” In that year, the average age at which American women married was 20.6 years old.

But 1987 that average was up to 23.3 years old, and according to the US Census Bureau, by 2003 it was 25.1 years, where it remains today.

Meanwhile, the percentage of female teenagers becoming sexually active rose from 30% to 40% between 1982 and 1988, and now, 20 years later, the rate of high school students who have had intercourse is close to 50%. (They don’t count it as “sex” unless you have intercourse, you know.) In short, that means a lot of young American women, who used to go into their marriages with no sexual experience, now tend to have a significant amount of time as sexually active people before they marry–most as much as a decade.

Not only that, but as the generations have progressed from the swingin’ seventies to today, the kinds of sex that women are having has proliferated. The likelihood that they have experience with spanking, bondage, multiple partners, bisexuality, and other things that would have once been considered outre is now quite high as well, with 48% of people currently in their 20s reporting they have at least “experimented” with these activities.

Is it any wonder, then, that romance novels have changed, too?

This doesn’t mean that every romance reader wants in her life–or in her fiction–non-stop sex, kinky sex, or partner swapping. But the “bodice rippers” that were a staple of past generations are now often seen as either laughable or even anti-woman by modern readers, and the breathless euphemisms that used to be standard in the genre come off as quaint or unintentionally funny. The back cover copy on Woodiwiss’s “Flame…” speaks of “…the Carolina plantation where Brandon finally probes the depths of Heather’s full womanhood!”

We might make fun of the old style of marketing, but there is no denying that whatever language is used, romances have always been about passion as well as love. And just as fewer and fewer women would find a chaste kiss to be satisfying after a romantic dinner out, and now they want the same desires reflected in their favorite fiction.

But what distinguishes erotic romance from “erotica”(a broad term in itself)? Is erotic romance just a hybrid between romance and erotic fiction? In actuality, it’s the strength of the romance genre that allows so much flexibility in what we can call “romance” these days. The two unchanging aspects are the focus on love and the core relationship, and the happy/emotionally satisfying ending. That leaves a lot of room to have different historical settings, mystery subplots, fantastical aspects. As Beatrice Small wrote in a 2007 essay on the history of the genre, “[In the 1970s] romance [grew into] a billion dollar baby for publishing. It was a two-headed baby to begin with: Historicals and Category. But then as women’s palates grew more sophisticated, baby grew more heads. Historical and Category were joined by Western, Thriller, Paranormal, Glitz, Chick-Lit, Christian, Contemporary, and OHMYSTARS! Erotic, just to name a few. And the Historical sub-genre had sub-sub-genres. Regency. Georgian. Medieval. [and so on.]”

In other words, romance is a great-looking model on which you can put any kind of outfit, whether a medieval ball gown or six-inch spike heels and a leather corset.

For me, it isn’t the amount of sex in a book, nor how graphic it is, that makes a book “erotica” and not romance. I am one of those women for whom love and sex go hand in hand in my real life. I wouldn’t dream of spending my life with someone if I didn’t know we were compatible in bed. In a love story, especially a contemporary one, I feel like I need to see some erotic interaction between the characters in order to believe that their love is real and can work. In historicals I find Unresolved Sexual Tension more believable than in stories set in the modern day, but what I am still seeking is the ultimate release of that tension. I love writers who can wind the ratchet tighter and tighter, but just like someone who is great at teasing in bed, I want them to eventually deliver me that mind-shattering release.

More sex scenes do not necessarily make a “hotter” book, the way more salt and pepper doesn’t automatically make a meal taste better. What is most arousing is when the sex is convincing, when it makes sense with the characters and when it follows a logical progression through their emotional lives.

There are plenty of books of erotica out there. I know, because I’ve written them. Many of them are collections of short stories, because erotica can so often be about the fling, the one-night stand, the exploration of a character’s sexual growth, but doesn’t necessarily have to be about love. Short stories are flings, but novels are relationships. And just as I found I need to see some sexual interaction between characters for me to believe they are falling in love, I also have to see them falling in love in order to believe that they are going to keep having sex for the space of an entire novel! If they aren’t, if the plot is not a love story but just an vehicle to get us from one sex scene to another, inventive and arousing as the scenes may be, I’d classify a book as erotica, and not erotic romance.

When I sat down to write my book MIND GAMES, which I’d classify as an erotic paranormal suspense romance, I had already come up with the characters many years before. I’d originally envisioned Wren and Derek as an established couple, and I was trying to write them in a kind of detective/spy scenario where their partnership and relationship were already long since established. But that idea never really firmed up. I kept asking myself how they had come to be a couple, and how did they find out that sex enhanced her psychic abilities? Ultimately I realized I couldn’t write what happens in their future until I wrote their love story and answered those questions.

It was an incredible experience writing them falling in love. After over a decade of writing and publishing dozens of erotic short stories, in places like Ms. Magazine, Best American Erotica, and Nerve, having the room to follow the characters from their initial meeting and spark of attraction, right through to their eventual emotional break-throughs, felt like a decadent luxury to me. I really was able to focus on the emotions, not just on Wren’s attraction and feelings of arousal, but also her conflicted feelings, her fears, her past wounds, and her determination to make this time different from the failed relationships of the past.

Now that I think about it, I did the exact same thing in my second romance novel, THE HOT STREAK. If anything, THE HOT STREAK concentrates even more on the relationship because there is no mystery sub-plot. All the “action” revolves around our heroine falling in love with a baseball player and learning to negotiate the ups and downs of being a “major league girlfriend.” It’s a much more light-hearted book than MIND GAMES, but again there’s that theme of her not yet having found Mr. Right, and then all the doors it opens in her heart and her life when she finally meets him.

Ultimately, this is why erotic romance is still romance, because although we want him in bed, we still want Mr. Right. It’s just romance created to satisfy the women like me who aren’t satisfied by a story that doesn’t meet their own sexual reality, and those are the women I set out to please, too. And I’m sure as the needs and lives of women continue to change in the 21st century, the heroines and stories we find in romances will change to meet them.

I've appeared at a lot of writers’ conferences in the past 6 months (Romantic Times, Las Vegas, San Diego, Florida, ) and am set to do a bunch more (Writer's Digest, Lori Foster's, Necon, Killercon). I usually end up on an editors’ panel where I try to explain where Ravenous Romance is coming from editorially, and what sets us apart.

I got a phone call today from a major trade publisher, who is buying a number of our titles for reprint. He gushed about how much fun our books were to read, and how he thought he knew what to expect and yet was pleasantly surprised. He also said that the sex in the books was as good as any erotica he'd ever read, and he's been reading erotica for decades.

Whenever I do one of these panels, I always tell people that I have wanted to start an erotica company for women since I was a teenager coming of age in the 70s. I was completely blown away by Anais Nin and her Delta of Venus and Little Birds (and later read her diaries, twice), as well as Nancy Friday's various sexual fantasy collections. Erica Jong and Marilyn French didn't grab me as hard, but I was fascinated by the burgeoning genre of “clit lit.” The Anne Rice Beauty books came out when I was in college, and I was sure feminist erotica would soon rival that of the bad boys of American letters - John Updike, Philip Roth, Henry Miller.

But then there was nothing. Or more of the same male erotica, but nothing more by women, for women. Where was the feminist “smut”? I kept on reading the New York Times Book Review, but couldn't find a thing.

And then, out of left field (or, more accurately, Ohio) emerged Ellora's Cave. As a reader, I was thrilled to find this empowering online bookstore of erotic stories for women.

I was also looking for the thread that would link this new erotic readership to the not-so-distant literary tradition of erotica, but this new material was more about opening the bedroom door in the romance novels of my teens, which I also endorsed.

At Ravenous, we want to merge these two powerful (and commercial) erotic sensibilities, widening the readership of this female-pleasing (even if they're M/M stories) entertainment. We are reaching the readers of explicitly erotic romance, as well as the erotica reader, offering a guaranteed Happy Ending (which is what both these forms of fiction demand).

And I firmly believe that if Anais Nin were writing today, she's be writing for Ravenous and other digital erotic romance publishers, and making a small fortune

Holly and I have been having meetings (and drinks) from morning to night.

Had a great breakfast with Susan Swinwood of Harlequin, one of my favorite editors. Aslo reconnected with Amy Pierpont of Grand Central, who went to her laptop and read "Cherry Pie" by Rachel Kramer Bussel right after we met.

We have an RR authors' interview with All Romance Ebooks at 10:00, then Holly takes pitches. Mine are in the afternoon.

Chastity's Flame is a spy novel where the protagonist is a woman. Lots of intrigue and intriguing situations.

The short story of the day is by Cheryl Brooks who wrote this great erotic science fiction novel, SLAVE, for Sourcebooks. It was one of the give-aways at last year's RWA convention in San Francisco, but I was already reading it on the plane over. It's a great, hot novel about a female spaceship captain who buys a catman and frees him, because she has to find and free her sister on a planet where all the women are slaves. It works. And is very creative.

Anyway, I sent Cheryl a fan letter and she sent us a short story, that was so hot it made me blush.

Then I ran to Yankee Stadium (first time in the new Stadium) for an exhibition game with the Cubs.

And then I had 5 minutes to check the RR website and was thrilled to see that Bethany Michaels' NASHVILLE HEAT is up. Once again, a really hot cover. This is a great story about a woman who goes to Nashville to follow her music muse and meets the bad boy of Country. It's a really good read.

The author lives in Nashville (so the setting is authentic) and has written a number of erotic romances for other epubs (as well as a story in my SeXmas anthology).
